38.25Kg of Silver Seized at Cochin International Airport

Customs officials at the Cochin international airport seized 38.25 kg of silver goods worth `16.50 lakh, which was sent as unaccompanied baggage. Ratheesh Babu of Moovattupuzha, who booked the baggage from Dubai, has been arrested.
This is the first time a major haul of contraband was seized at the air cargo complex in Kochi.
According to customs, Ratheesh came to Kochi by flight EK 532 on July 10. He had sent his unaccompanied baggage to the air cargo complext and filed a baggage declaration for clearance of one pack imported by flight EK 532 on July 19.When the package was opened on July 20 for examination, white metal pieces of various shapes and sizes were found, leading to the suspicion that the goods contained silver”, said officials.
Samples were collected and forwarded for chemical examination at the customs laboratory. The laboratory confirmed that the samples were silver, with a purity of 99.3 percent to 99.6 per cent.Customs officials said the goods were seized as per provisions of Section 110 of Customs Act 1962.
The operation was carried out by a team of customs officials as directed by customs deputy commissioner C Madhavan
