Athletes need Rs 1 Lakh For Kuala Lumpur Asian School Field & Track Championship

Kochi
28 aspirants from Kerala hoping to represent the country at the Kuala Lumpur Asian School Field & Track Championship, slated from September 17 to 24.If they fail to raise a lakh of rupees within a week they won’t be allowed to take part in the trials for selecting the national team scheduled to be held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi in Pune. Date of registration for the trials, beginning next Tuesday, is August 4.
A directive from the Sports Games Federation of India (SGFI) to the state units (directorate of public instruction in the case of Kerala) has clearly communicated that each athlete must carry with them Rs 1-lakh DD drawn in its favour and payable at Agra. The amount is towards the respective athlete’s expenses during the Malaysia meet.
SGFI is “least hopeful” of getting financial support from the Centre to facilitate the team’s travel to Kaula Lumpur. “So, we have demanded the respective state governments to raise funds. Or we won’t allow the athlete to take part in the Pune trials,” Rajesh Kumar Mishra, SGFI secretary general, told TOI.
Except for lucky few like Sreenith Mohan (high jumper of GHSS, Elamakkara) who is sponsored under the Kerala Cricket Association’s Mission Gold Scheme, many a talent, including state champs PU Chitra of Mundur HS, Palakkad and Mohammed Afsal of Parli HS, wouldn’t make it to Pune.
