The contractors of the Kochi Corporation will go on an indefinite strike if the Corporation authorities fail to pay the arrears due to them by September 10.

At a meeting held the other day the Corporation authorities have agreed to pay the contractors a sum of `10 crore before September 10. “The Mayor has informed us that he will pay `10 crore out of the total arrears by next month. This is for third time that we are postponing the deadline and if the civic body fails to keep its word this time, we are left with no option but to go for an indefinite strike,” said Cochin Corporation Contractors Association president M R Chandran Pillai.

If the contractors go for a stir, various ongoing construction works in the Corporation area, including roads and drains, will come to a halt. “We are already affected by the steep increase in the cost of construction materials including steel, cement and tarring materials. Already various bills worth

Rs 18 crore have been approved by the Corporation and are remaining unpaid. Another six-crore worth bills are to be cleared. So, it will be difficult for us to undertake new works without getting the payment,” Pillai added.

He said that various works under People’s Plan Fund, Corporation’s own fund and waste removal from the city will come to a standstill if the contractors go for an indefinite strike.
