The portable light trap developed by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra(KVK) Palakkad, has proved to be an eco-friendly gadget which monitors pests in fields. Its unique feature is that it can differentiate between harmful and harmless pests. This was found during experiments conducted at research and extension centers in Kerala. The light traps will soon be given to paddy farmers considering their efficacy.

This new equipment will save farmers from needless spraying. “The main advantage of this portable light trap is that it can be placed anywhere in the paddy fields. It consumes very little electricity. Till now, the indiscriminate use of chemical sprays was killing all insects, even the good ones too. This can be avoided now“, said Dr Shaji James, associate pro fessor and head of KVK.
