NIA to investigate and handle the Marines Case

New Delhi
National Investigation Agency or NIA will investigate the killing of two Indian fishermen allegedly by two Italian marines off the Kerala coast in February last year. The Centre has said that the two marines, Salvatore Girone and Massimiliano Latorre, who have been charged with murder, will be tried by a special court in Delhi with daily hearings.
The NIA is the custodian of Indian maritime laws and is tasked with dealing with criminal offenses at sea within India’s territorial jurisdiction. Kerala had sought that a special court be set up in their state to try the Italian marines, who returned to India to stand trial last month after days of Italy refusing to send them back.
