FIR Against Italy Marines NIA

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has booked the Italian marines Salvatore Girone and Massimiliano Latorre, who shot dead two fishermen off the Kerala coast in Feb 2012, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including Sec 302.The NIA also registered a case against the marines under Sec 3 of the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Safety of Maritime Navigation and Fixed Platforms on Continental Shelf Act. If the special court that is supposed to try Girone and Latorre finds them guilty under this Act, the accused could be awarded capital punishment.

The Kerala Police invoked the murder charge against the two accused under Sec 302 apart from two charges under Sec 427 (mischief) and Sec 34 (common intention) of the IPC. The FIR registered by the NIA on Thursday mentioned all these three charges but significantly added another under the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Safety of Maritime Navigation and Fixed Platforms on Continental Shelf Act.
