The Kerala government has assured all possible help for treatment of a eight-year-old girl from the state who was raped in the textile town of Tirupur in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Chief minister Oommen Chandy described the incident as “unfortunate” and said the government would make inquiries about the incident with the investigating authorities and its counterparts in Tamil Nadu government.

According to reports, the minor child was raped a week ago while she was left alone at home during the day when her mother, who hails from Ernakulam district, had been to work at a textile unit. The woman has been working at Tirupur for nearly seven years. It is believed that the child was raped by four men, two of who were neighbours.

Tamil Nadu police have taken into custody four men identified as Kannan (23), Devendran (24) who were the child’s neighbours, and their friends Sarvanan (40) and Raja (41) in connection with the case.
