Some ten kilometers of heavily trafficked roads in North Kerala would be conditioned by imported Chinese material — Stone Mastic Asphalt — which gives roads more durability. On June 1, Kerala state road transport project would launch the scheme wherein SMA and fibre would be mixed on the Kasaragod – Kanhangad, Pilathara –Pappinisherry, Thalassery –Valavuppara stretches.
The decision was taken by PWD minister V.K. Ebrahim Kunju after a high-level delegation of finance and PWD officials undertook a 12-day visit of China and Australia, under his leadership.“We were largely impressed by the road infrastructure development in China. Already the SMA technique is being implemented in the rest of the country. If the KSTP’s pilot project is successful, we would be replicating it in a few more districts,” Ebrahim Kunju told DC.
