Kerala is likely to take a stand that they are ready to release water from Neyyar Dam when the Tamil Nadu petition on the issue is taken by Supreme Court on Monday.Sources said that however, state would make clear that water would be released only if they signed a five-year agreement on the issue.
Kerala also would not agree for the demand for a 30-year agreement put forward by Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu had sought release of water from Neyyar dam to irrigate the farming lands of Vilayamkottu taluk in Kanyakumari.Tamil Nadu had demanded a release of 152 tmc water per day arguing that there was copious rainfall in Kerala so it would not be a tough task for Kerala.
Tamil Nadu argued that Neyyar project was covered under sub-section (2) of section 108 of the State Re-organisation Act, 1956 (SRA, 1956), and Tamil Nadu and its inhabitants have legal rights to continue with the existing arrangement under the Neyyar Irrigation Project.
