A month after a five-member masked gang made away with cash and jewels from a finance firm at Attingal, four people were arrested in connection with the heist on Monday. Police identified the accused as Mahendran (27) of Chokkampatti, Thenkasi, Unais (24) of Pezhummoodu, Kattakkada, Jaseer (40) of Kuttara, Vamanapuram and Aneesh (29) of Mattancherry, Ernakulam.
The theft happened on June 17 when three people had stormed the office room, tied up the staff and robbed gold ornaments weighing 1.5 kg and cash worth Rs 5.7 lakh from the strong room from Popular Finance. Two of the robbers wore masks and plundered the valuables while the third man watched over the employees.
Police recovered about 750 grams of gold ornaments from the accused. While all others had pledged the ornaments or sold them, Jaseer had hidden his portion of loot inside the well in the courtyard of his house.
Jaseer was the first to land in police custody. Police had taken him into custody on the pretext of a scuffle. When quizzed, he confessed to the crime and also revealed the whereabouts of others.
