Kerala Govt not to Go with Indira Awaas Yojana

Kochi
The state government has ordered suspension of the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) in the state following complaints that the new norms for the scheme issued by the centre are not suited for the state.
According to sources, with the election year approaching, the central government issued the revised norms apportioning 47 percent of the houses under the scheme to minorities while giving 30 percent to scheduled castes and 15 percent to scheduled tribes.
Due to the sensitivity of the issue, the Chief Minister ordered suspension of the scheme and the Local Self-Government Principal Secretary was asked to write a letter to the centre pointing out that the situation in the state was different from other parts of the country and hence a revision in norms was needed.
Chandy and Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph are slated to take up the issue with Union Minister Jairam Ramesh as well.
