The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is literally in deep water, but this time it’s a case for cheer. As of Monday, storage levels in the hydel reservoirs were just shy of 70 per cent, the highest in the past decade and almost six times the storage at the start of the Southwest Monsoon.

On June 1, just before the monsoon ‘officially’ set in, the hydel reservoirs were only 12 per cent full, with water to generate a dismal 502.93 million units (MU). In fact, it was also the decade’s lowest storage level. But an overly enthusiastic monsoon has not even required two months to repaint the entire canvass.

As of Monday, the reservoirs were holding enough water to generate 2862.94 MU, and figures released by the KSEB state load despatch centre pegged storage at 69 per cent, the highest of the decade.
