Record Breaking Monsoon This Year in Kerala

Kerala is currently witnessing the worst of monsoon woes in decades, with rivers overflowing and flooding several cities and suburbs. And Keralites are struggling to come to terms with the situation, which they describe as something they have seen only on television. They never ever thought they would be victims themselves, they say.
The worst hit is residents in low-lying areas like Aluva and Kalamassery. With the water levels rising, some of the residents are stuck inside their houses, while others have been forced to take refuge in relatives’ houses or have been evacuated to safer places.
SCMS college of Engineering, Aluva, has been closed down, and students asked to vacate the hostels. Parents are wary of sending their children to even nearby schools, as the flooding and the ensuing traffic blocks and diversions are unpredictable.
Office buildings in low lying areas have been closed down, and employees have been asked to stay at home until the rain subsides. “Our office in Aluva is on the ground floor and there is some 1.5 lakh worth computers and other gadgets, all of which we have shifted to upper storeys temporarily,” says Nithin P P, who works at a DTH service centre.
