Kerala’s chicken farmers to Call of their Strike

The strike by Kerala’s chicken farmers and traders, which caused shutdown of hundreds of chicken stalls and stalled arrival of chicken trucks from Tamil Nadu, was called off on the eighth day on Wednesday.
The Poultry Farmers and Traders Coordination Committee, which had spearheaded the strike, announced the “unconditional call-off” in view of the government’s “irresponsible indifference and lack of concern for the Kerala’s poultry industry.”
The strike had caused huge losses to the chicken farmers and traders who kept up the agitation for eight days. The committee had only been prepared for three or four days of shutdown. Chicken transportation from Tamil Nadu had been suspended since August 28.
The strike was to press for a rollback of the base price of chicken and young chicks fixed by the government. The commercial taxes commissioner had recently increased the base price of chicken from Rs 70 a kg from Rs 95, and that of chicks from Rs 25 to Rs 35 on each chick. Since the tax on chicken is based on the base tax, the increase would mean that each chicken would carry a tax of Rs 28.
The committee also wanted the exemption limit of tax on chicken farms to be raised from a turnover of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 60 lakh. It also wanted the tax on chicks scrapped.
