The cost for construction of Kochi metro rail is likely to go up further with the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) earmarking almost double of the amount previously estimated for the construction of the casting yard.
As per the latest information, the KMRL has earmarked `7.42 crore for the casting yard. The total project cost of Kochi metro rail is estimated to be `5,600 crore.
However, the cost might increase due to the expenditure for casting yard and other related facilities. The KMRL also had to clear the hurdles for widening of South ROB and pipeline-laying on SA Road.
There are already demands from various sections that these works should also be entrusted with the KMRL. With this, the expense is likely to go beyond the estimated amount.
The KMRL will spend `7.42 crore for setting up a year-long tempering facility. The casting yard is coming up on land acquired on lease from FACT (4.05 hectares) and HMT (5.03 hectares). Land from FACT is leased on `35 lakh per year while the lease amount for HMT is `31.5 lakh per hectare.
The lease amount will increase by 10 and 6 per cent, respectively, per year.Though the KMRL authorities had plans to acquire land in the possession of Cochin Port Trust, the idea was abandoned later considering the possibility of water logging in the area.
