Another Pipe Burst at Cochin Metro Site

The state government’s lackadaisical approach in addressing the issue of shifting the utility lines along the path of Kochi Metro has resulted in yet another incident of pipe burst in the city. On Wednesday evening as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) proceeded with the piling works, water gushed out from an unidentified pipeline at the construction site near Changampuzha Park in Edappally.
Though the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has expressed its limitation in shifting the pipelines to facilitate the construction of Metro, the government has not come up with a decision. The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has also stated that the Metro agency will not be able to meet the expenses for relocating the utility service lines. Officials with Kochi Metro confirmed that “an unidentified pipeline has burst on the stretch”.
According to them, they had adopted a practice of checking the presence of utility lines by digging trial pits at the construction sites. “Similar incidents on MG Road and the construction site at north railway overbridge (ROB) had forced Metro officials to dig trial pits. In fact, it was while executing this work the pipe erupted,” said a Metro officer.
