The arrest of Bodo militant in Kerala is a worrying sign. The Kerala police had arrested Dimga aka Lidion Basumatary, a militant of the NDFB from Kozhikode yesterday. A wanted militant who has been on the run since several years now was finally apprehended on the basis of an intelligence input.

The bigger question that crops up in the wake of this arrest is what was Dimga doing in Kerala. While he is being interrogated currently, the Intelligence Bureau strongly suspect that he could have had well established contacts in Kerala. The state of Kerala has been witnessing an undercurrent in terms of Jihadi and Maoist activities and hence has become a safe hiding ground for criminals.

The 34 year old Dimga is a resident of Chirang in Assam and is the organizing secretary of the NDFB, a banned outfit in India. The police have learnt that he had rented out a house in for the past two weeks.

Investigations also revealed he had slipped into Kerala through Chennai. He was in Assam and when he realized that the police were reaching up to him, he decided to take shelter in Kerala. In Chennai he had taken the help of migrant workers and as he realized that his location had been blown he moved into Kerala.

There are 100 cases against him and his arrest is a major breakthrough for the police forces. A team of the Assam police will visit Kerala today and seek his custody. There are various reasons he could have taken shelter in Kerala. There has been a gradual build up of naxal forces in Kerala which have been sympathetic towards the cause of the Assam militants.

His connections in Kerala are being ascertained, but what has become very clear is that he had sought the help of the migrant workers to seek shelter. Most of the migrant workers infiltrate into India from Bangladesh with the help of the militants. Assam has faced this problem of a growing migrant population for long.
