Police in Kozhikode have arrested a Delhi goldsmith who they alleged used to fly down men to Kerala, where they would move on two-wheelers, snatch gold ornaments from women, often melt the gold and board trains headed to the national capital.
Kozhikode Police Commissioner G Sparjan Kumar said Haji Nazirudheen Sony (46) was nabbed from his house in the Chand Bagh area of Northeast Delhi early Monday. He has been brought to Kozhikode and will be produced before a magistrate on Wednesday. According to police, Mohammed Shakeel (30) and Noushad Ali (24) were chased by residents who had been on the alert ever since a woman was targeted by men on a two-wheeler who fled with her gold chain.
Police sources said Sony and his associates were involved in more than 40 cases of chain snatching in Kerala.
