Flight operations at the Cochin International Airport, which was closed on Monday due to heavy rain and water-logging on runway, resumed by 3.30 pm on Tuesday. The operations resumed with the landing of Air India flight AI-509 from Chennai, which was followed by the landing of Air India Express and Indigo flights from Mumbai.

The check-in for international passengers began by noon while that for domestic passengers resumed in the afternoon. At a press conference, Cochin International Airport Ltd managing director V J Kurian said the Customs and Immigration Wing would deploy additional personnel to clear the backlog of passengers.

“The runway in Kochi airport is 8.5m above the sea level. We pumped out 16,000 litres of water per minute. The runway has been cleaned. The lighting on runway was also tested,” Kurian said. He said 25 international services were in backlog and instructions had been given to international airlines to send their large aircraft such as Boeing-747 so that maximum number of passengers can be carried in a single trip.
