The students of the Cochin Medical College(CMC) are planning to launch an agitation demanding the takeover of the college by the state government. According to student leaders, lack of qualified teachers, especially in pre-clinical departments, can be solved only if the government takes over the college. “Once it is taken over, only qualified and experienced persons can be appointed for teaching,” they said.
Though the state government announced the takeover of the CMC in April this year, nothing has been done so far, except for the asset liability report prepared by the District Collector and the formation of a committee to study it.
“The Medical College does not have adequate teaching faculty. When we raised the issue before the college authorities, they recruited a few junior people and filled the posts. But they do not have the required qualification, with many MSc holders being appointed. The College authorities have not even bothered to submit a proper explanation to a notice issued by the High Court on a petition filed by us demanding a proper faculty,” said K S Shreeshyam, former chairman of the College Union. He said that they would be launching agitations after the ongoing examinations were over.
“Only a few of them are MBBS holders and the majority have only an Msc degree. Even one of the heads of the department is an MSc holder,” points out Dr N K Sanil Kumar, a volunteer of the movement demanding the takeover of the college.
However, CMC Medical Director Junaid Rahman, who denied that there were issues also maintained that 16 people were recruited recently to fill up the vacancies in the teaching faculty. “As per the norms, a certain per cent of MSc holders are eligible to join the teaching faculty. But they are not entitled to promotion,” Dr Junaid said.
