Computer to Be Given to Students in Kerala

Kerala Government has decided that they will distribute 10,000 Raspberry Pi computers to government and aided school students from eighth standard to eleventh standard in May this year in order to increase computer literacy among the students here.
A pilot project, Raspberry Pi Programme, will be launched in Thiruvananthapuram next week. The device will be given to 25 students in the state capital. The state government had allocated `5 crore for the project recently.
The Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting teaching of basic computer science in schools. Power is provided to the device through a micro USB. It has also got USB ports to connect mouse and keyboard. The main aim of the device is to make the students aware of software as well as hardware.
A resource group has been formed in order to train the students to use Raspberry Pi,” said Babu Sebastian, Executive Director (In charge), IT @ School. He added that Raspberry Pi devices would reach the state shortly. When the project is officially launched, a 12-day training programme would be given to 10,000 students at 200 selected training centres across the state.
