Ernakulam to have 16 more courts
Ernakulam District of Kerala will be be now having 16 out of 27 proposed new temporary courts to which the state government has given green signal. There are about 2.5 lakh cases pending in Magistrate courts in Ernakulam, which has the most number of pending cases among districts in Kerala.
The district has thus been allotted 15 temporary Magistrate courts and one court to deal with cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Five courts have been allotted for Kollam, four in Thiruvananthapuram, and one each in Kozhikode and Thrissur.
The courts were proposed more than a year ago and the High Court prepared a report with details regarding the location, necessary staff strength, and other recommendations in July 2013. The sanctioning of the courts was delayed as they were awaiting clearance of funds. The sanction order released by the government recently said the expenditure would be met from the 13 Finance Commission award.
Ernakulam already has 19 Magistrate courts. Two new courts will come up in the Ernakulam region and one each at Tripunithura, Mattanchery, Njarakkal, Kalamassery, Kakkanad, Angamaly, North Paravur, Piravom, Chottanikkara, Koothattukulam, Kuruppumpady, Kothamangalam, and Kalady.
