Faisal, brother of Fayas who is a key accused in the Nedumbassery gold smuggling case, filed an anticipatory bail application before the District Principal Sessions Court here on Friday. The Customs Department has accused Faisal of being a party to the gold smuggling operation.
“The only allegation against Faisal is that he could be a beneficiary of his brother’s alleged operation. Searches have been conducted at Faisal’s house and no incriminating evidence has been found. These are all just pressure tactics by the department,” said Geo Paul, counsel for Faisal.
Fayas is one of the seven persons listed as accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the First Information Report filed in the case on Thursday. The case was registered after two women, Arifa and Asifa, were detained at the Cochin international airport at Nedumbassery recently with 20 kg of gold. The CBI has also accused three Customs officials, including Deputy Commissioner C. Madhavan, of entering into a criminal conspiracy to aid the smuggling. Mr. Madhavan and Preventive Officers P.P. Sunilkumar and Sanjay Kumar Soni allegedly benefited from the smuggling activities through the airport. Mr. Soni allegedly received a 42” LED television set from the smuggling racket.
