The Tripura police will soon send a team to Kerala to arrest top officials of the Global Education Net (GENET) who are facing charges of fraud, diverting government funds and receiving unauthorised loans from a bank.

The move preceded an FIR lodged in a police station by the State’s health and family welfare department, five years after the group, an affiliate of the Universal Empire Group, closed the 100-seat Tripura Medical College at Hafania, near Agartala.

The Tripura government had signed an agreement with GENET in 2004 to run the medical college and the linked hospital under a private public partnership (PPP) initiative of the State. However, the group left the State in 2008, leaving the government in disarray and students as well as hundreds of staff to face an uncertain future.

“We expect to get early permission from the home department to travel to Kerala,” a police officer said on Sunday. Four officials, including GENET Chairman K. Balachandran Nair, figure as accused in the complaint.

“After arresting the accused persons, we would move a local court in Kerala for a transit remand to bring them to Tripura,” the officer said. The Kerala police have been informed. Mr. Nair and his men are facing charges under Sections 406, 409, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

One of the major charges against the education group is unlawfully securing a huge loan from HUDCO by mortgaging the property of the Tripura Medical College which is presently run by a State government-appointed society.
