Hurdles in Natural Gas Grid Connectivity

According to the Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) officials, the deadline cannot be met as they are facing severe protest from various sections of society. The state may miss the opportunity to connect with the national natural gas grid. This is mainly because the laying of pipeline to equip the state to receive gas will be completed only by December 2014, given the current pace.

After completing the laying of pipelines for 45 kilometres in Kochi and nearby areas last September, GAIL has been able to lay only 20 kilometres of pipelines in Kasargod, Kannur, Thrissur and Palakkad districts. K P Ramesh, deputy general manager, GAIL, said that the pipeline laying is proceeding very slowly as they could lay only 20 kilometres in six months. “It seems the people of Kerala are not aware of the benefits of natural gas or they are misled by people with vested interests. We doubt that political leaders who own lands where the pipes are being laid are behind the protest.

Around 500 km of the proposed pipeline stretch falls in Kerala, through Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod.Experts point out that if the pipeline laying is delayed on end, the state will be out from the national natural gas network.
