Members of Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) staged a walk out in the Kerala Assembly on Tuesday accusing the United Democratic Front government of misusing the vigilance and police machinery to silence political opponents. The walkout followed rejection of the notice moved by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan of CPM, for an adjournment motion on the issue by speaker G Karthikeyan. Seeking leave for the motion, moved in the wake of high court’s observation in the land allocation case against opposition leader V S Achuthanandan, Kodiyeri said that the government was trying to implicate opposition leaders in false cases.
Kodiyeri said that the government had a different policy in dealing with cases against ministers and ruling front leaders. The cases against them are being withdrawn. He urged the government to change its hostile attitude towards the opposition. Before leading the walking out, Achuthanandan said the land case against him was bogus and alleged that he was implicated in the case because he was still fighting cases against Chandy (in Palmolive import corruption case) and Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty (ice cream sex scandal).
