Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the State Assembly that an Air Ambulance Service, connecting major Government and private hospitals, will be introduced by the Health Department soon.

He said steps were being taken to introduce a permanent Air Ambulance Service to deal with emergency situations.

The decision was taken after the state used an air ambulance for the first time to facilitate a heart transplantation on Friday evening last, he added.

The donor’s heart was airlifted from here in a Navy’s Dornier aircraft to Kochi to transplant it on the recipient.

Expressing the Government’s gratitude to the family of Neelakanta Sharma who donated the heart to Autorickshaw Driver Mathew Achadan in Kochi, the Chief Minister thanked all those who supported for making the heart transplantation successful.

He said the successful heart transplantation making use of air ambulance for the first time in the state was a great achievement. The Chief Minster was speaking after a special mention in this regard by Speaker N Sakthan, who expressed his gratitude to the family of the organ donor, hoping that this would be a mile stone in the history of organ donation in the State.
