Kerala Water Authority Wants Hike in Tariff

The Kerala Water Authority has submitted a proposal to the state government to raise water tariff in the range of 60 to 100 percent due to financial crisis. Water Resources Minister P. J. Joseph told DC that a decision on the issue will be taken by the cabinet.
Sources said that the KWA had incurred a loss of Rs 251.99 crore at the end of the last fiscal year. It was hoping to tide over the losses through the tariff revision.The state now has a total of 14, 65,448 connections, including 11,67,368 domestic, 91,633 non-domestic, 945 industrial, and 20,5502 public hydrants, sources said.
The total pipe water consumption in rural areas per year stood at13.9 million cubic metres, while that in urban areas stood at 29.3 million cubic metres.The annual yield of water in the state in a normal year is around 7,030 crore cubic metres, with a utilizable water resource of 4,200 crore cubic metres.
The loss of water through various sources during distribution came to around 17 to 40 percent, sources said.
