Press Trust of India (PTI) reports the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) is drawing up a plan to establish the place as an agri-heritage site for its below sea-level agrarian method — a unique farming method practiced in Kuttanad in the south-west Indian state.
Kuttanad is one of the few place in the world where faring is done below sea level. Sources said the heritage programme would involve the setting up of a natural history museum, a centre for rice germplasm and a research and training centre for below sea-level farming.
The centre for rice germplasm, planned in Mankombu, will house all available varieties of seed while the rice research station in Kumarakom will facilitate training programmes on unique farming techniques.
