Giving a major boost to development prospects in Kerala, LNG vessel ‘Wilenergy’, the first such vessel to reach the state, was berthed at Puthuvype terminal of Petronet LNG Limited around 7 am on Tuesday.
At a press conference here, Petronet LNG officials said supply from the terminal will start in a couple of days and official commissioning will take place by October. The vessel has a capacity of 1.25 lakh cubic metres of LNG and it would be sufficient to operate the terminal for about three months.
The cargo came from RasGas in Qatar and the initial customers will be BPCL-Kochi Refinery and Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited. Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited and Nitta Gelatin are the immediate prospective buyers. A K Balyan, managing director and CEO, Petronet LNG Ltd, said the terminal would initially operate below 10 per cent of the installed capacity due to non-laying of pipelines.
“The major concern is that only phase-I of GAIL’s pipeline network, covering about 44 km, is complete and this caters only to the limited industrial areas of the city. Petronet is foraying into direct marketing of LNG through trucks to LNG hubs, satellite stations on customers’s premises in regions by pipelines under the brand name of ‘Taral Gas’,” Balyan said.
