According to Met Department Monsson in Kerala is expected to to come in next 10 days. According to the weatherman, the ongoing rains lashing many parts of the state are ‘pre-monsoon showers’ that the state usually receives at this time of the year.
“There is very little chance of the monsoon arriving before the expected date of June 3 as various factors conducive for the onset of monsoon have not yet set in,’’ said V K Mini, Scientist-C, Meteorological Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. However, there is a margin of four 4 days on either side of the predicted date, she said.
For the onset of monsoon, three factors are very crucial – pressure level, wind speed and Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR). All three factors have not met the required parameters till now, Mini said. “The depth of westerly winds should be maintained at 4.5 km (600 hPa). Besides this, the zonal wind speed of westerly winds should be between 15 to 20 knots over an area bonded by 5-10 degree north latitude and 70-75 degree east longitude,” she said. Another important factor is OLR in the same region, which should be below 200 watts per square metre,’’ Mini said.
