New Special Energy Meters for Electricity by KSEB

With the State Electricity Regulatory Commission finalizing norms for open access facility for power purchase, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is looking at special energy meters for accurately measuring the electricity thus procured. Following a request by EHT (Extra High Tension) consumers, the KSEB is preparing a list of efficient models of ‘Availability-Based Tariff’ (ABT) meters and also specifications so that consumers can procure them on their own if needed.
The matter was discussed between the KSEB and the high-end industrial consumers (who generally fall in the EHT category). Open access allows consumers to procure electricity from distributors other than the KSEB, using the transmission facilities of the KSEB.
“To put it in a nutshell, ABT meters will allow the KSEB to accurately measure the power procured by a consumer through normal KSEB channels and via open access,” KSEB chief engineer (commercial and tariff) Dinesh D said.
On the other hand, the Time-of-Day (ToD) meters, the other special energy meters which the KSEB has in place, measures the consumption during off-peak hour and peak hour time zones.
