National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Monday set into motion the process to upgrade National Highways 212 including the treacherous stretch between Mysore and Nanjangud. The NH 212 connects Kozhikode in Kerala with Kollegal in Karnataka via Mysore. A major portion of the 250-km stretch lies in Karnataka, which the NHAI is upgrading to four-lane expressway; 160 km lies in Karnataka while it is 90 km in Kerala.
The NHAI’s special land acquisition officer G Rashmi on Monday visited Mysore taluk office and spoke to farmers ahead of acquisition of the required land. The NHAI is seeking to acquire a little over 100 acres in Karnataka to upgrade NH, which is now a 22-meter carriageway. In some sections, the width of the road is 40 meters. The NHAI is seeking to upgrade the entire 160 km stretch in Karnataka to a four-lane expressway, which includes the 24-km stretch between Mysore and Nanjangud, which is a major industrial belt adding to the volume of traffic.
Given the increased volume of traffic on treacherous stretch, the upgrading of the highway was a long pending demand from the industrialists. But the project could come in the way of expansion of the Mysore Airport as the proposed extension of the runway cuts across the Mysore-Nanjangud road.
