Online frauds fish out Rs 200 crore from Kerala in 2 years 14 cases through fake Facebook accounts and dubious lotteries in the last two years, the police said. The loot may be ten times this amount as many of the victims shy away from reporting the crime for various reasons, police officers said.

Victims who have lost money in online lottery scams include IAS officers, bank officers, teachers and scientists. Wives of some top officers have also been tricked by their online contacts.

A gang of Nigerians have swindled more than Rs 11 crore in a single case recently, the investigating officers have found out. Eight suspects have been held in the case.

Nigerians dominate the online fraud scene, where a job offer or a lottery result is used as bait to dupe unsuspecting people of money. They mostly work out of Tughlakabad, Khirki Extension, Sangam Vihar, Malviya Nagar areas in New Delhi.

It is estimated that about one lakh Nigerians are residing in New Delhi but police officers suspect about 4 lakh more people from the African country may be staying in the capital without the necessary papers. Many of them hold two or three passports.

Victims from Kerala are generally from Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. Many of them choose not to go to the police as the money would be accounted for. Several others do not want to make public their vulnerability.

These instances point to the need for stepping up vigilance in Internet use as Kerala graduates to the digital age, the police warn.
