Elamkunnapuzha panchayat officials and residents at Puthuvype are teaming up to protest against the Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC) proposed LPG terminal on the island.
The IOC’s project is envisaged to culminate the road movement of LPG in the state. According to IOC officials, the project will take at least another 24 months to complete if the work on the plant goes ahead at the present pace.
However, the residents are vehemently against the facility and say that they will resist the storage hub at Puthuvype as it is a threat to the lives of the over 60,000 residents in the region.
Beatrice Joseph, president of the Elamkunnapuzha panchayat has said that the panchayat and the residents of the area are opposed to the project. “The company (IOC) has not applied for any licence to carry on with the project in the panchayat area. We have decided not to give any licence for the project. If the facility comes up at the region, it will prove to be a grave threat for the residents. The company has also not received any approval from the panchayat authorities for the construction of compound wall,” she added.
