Review Meeting of Kochi Metro Work

In order to address the issues hampering the smooth progress of the Kochi Metro Rail project, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will visit the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) office on October 26.
The Chief Minister will also evaluate the progress of the project so far and will take part in the discussions to resolve the issues affecting the project. The meeting is expected to be attended by Transport Minister Aryadan Mohammed, Ports and Excise Minister K Babu, Public Works Minister Ebrahim Kunju, Minister for Urban Affairs and Welfare of Minorities Manjalamkuzhi Ali.
Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas will be a special invitee at the meet. Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany, MPs K P Dhanapalan and P Rajeev, MLAs Benny Behanan, Hibi Eden and Anwar Sadath, Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) chairman N Venugopal and other officials concerned are also expected to attend the meeting.
The Chief Minister will address some of the long-pending issues like the development of the Thammanam- Pulleppady Road, widening of Vyttila-Petta Road and shifting of the pipeline at S A Road by the KWA. Some other issues on the agenda will include the formation of a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) for Kochi, augmenting water transportation in Kochi under the Jawaharalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and formation of an SPV for availing JNNURM funding and to manage urban transport system in the Greater Kochi agglomeration area.
The meeting may also discuss the issues related to the reconstruction of the South rail overbridge (RoB). “We are eagerly looking forward to the meeting and expect that some key decisions will be taken after the discussion, which will have a significant impact on the city’s transport infrastructure,” Kochi Metro Rail Managing Director Elias George said.
