Rising Numbers of Kerala Needs more Roads

Survey By Transport Department on the number of vehicles registered in the state from April 2000 to March 31, 2012, reveals that over the last 12 years, the number of vehicles has witnessed nearly a 300 per cent rise, while the road length has remained nearly the same.As per the data, there are 68,70,354 vehicles registered in the state till March 31, 2012. The figure was 20,97,863 in April 2000.
The road length in the state is 1.74 lakh km and density about 1.5 km. According to Transport Department officials, by the end of March 2013, the number of vehicles is estimated to be cross the 75 lakh-mark in the state.These numbers are disturbingly high. About 73 lakh licenses are issued by the Transport Department in the state and on an average, the department receives 1,000 driving licence applications per day.
