The Food Corporation of India (FCI) will implement the Union Government’s project to build ‘silos’ for storing ample quantity of food grain, in public-private partnership (PPP) model in the state.
Union Minister of State for Food and Public Distribution K V Thomas told that the project was automatically withdrawn as the state government could not identify the land within the stipulated time.
“The state government was given six months’ time to identify land for the project. Now, the project will be implemented on PPP model as the state failed to come up with suitable land. The procedures for floating tenders have begun according to the norms of the Planning Commission,” he said.
FCI in its 344th meeting finalized to construct silos in 10 states, including Bihar, Haryana,Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and Gujarat.Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Anoop Jacob said though the State Government tried several times, it could not find a suitable place for the project.K V Thomas said that once the tender proceedings are over, the silos could be set up within two years, provided all the other factors are favorable.
