Strike Halts Truck Services to Kerala

Truck services to Kerala via Walayarcheckpost came to a grinding halt on Sunday with an indefinite strike called by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) which began on Saturday. An estimated 2,500 trucks have stopped their services to Kerala. This includes 500 trucks plying from Coimbatore, which normally would transport goods including vegetables, groceries, garments, eggs and machineries to the neighbouring state.

Due to the strike, several trucks were parked at the Ukkadam truck terminal in Coimbatore. Truck owners say that getting to Kerala via other check posts is not possible as the roads are narrow and often they faced public protest against the movement of heavy vehicles on these roads. Consequently, the transportation of goods worth Rs500cr has come to a halt.

Stakeholders demand immediate steps to speed up procedures at the Walayar check post. They feel it should not take more than 15 minutes to give appropriate clearance, assuming all papers are in place.Bookings for transportation had stopped five days ago and essential items are being sent to Kerala via rail.
