Tamil Nadu on Tuesday turned down Kerala’s request for drawing more water from Mullaperiyar dam, which is fast filling up following incessant rains in the catchment areas.
“Tamil Nadu PWD secretary told me that his state was already drawing 1,800 cusecs of water and they cannot draw beyond this,” said V J Kurien, additional chief secretary in charge of Kerala Water Resources Department (KWRD).
V J Kurien, additional chief secretary in charge of KWRD, said Tamil Nadu officials have informed him that they would not be able to draw more water from the dam as they were already drawing at the maximum level.
“Tamil Nadu PWD secretary told me that his state was already drawing 1,800 cusecs of water and they cannot draw beyond this. But the dam is receiving 2,300 cusecs of water and this is contributing to rising of water level in the dam,” Kurien said.
The water level in the dam rose to 134.6 feet on Tuesday and might reach the maximum level of 136 feet by Wednesday morning, Kerala Water Resources Department (KWRD) executive engineer Daniel George, who is camping near the dam, said.
