In the wake of traffic congestion caused by Kochi Metro Rail work, traffic curbs will be introduced for container lorries from Thursday, said District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth.
Containers from Alappuzha and Kottayam will have to reach Vallarpadom terminal via Willingdon Island using the Ro-Ro service. Vehicles from Aluva will have to use the Vallarpadom Container Road by using the Ro-Ro service to reach Willingdon Island to head to container station and other districts.
“Ro-Ro will be made efficient in this regard,” he said. There are about 400 container lorries that ply on Kundoor-Kalamassery National Highway. They all reach Vallarpadom from Kalamasserry. “In one trip, the Ro-Ro service can accommodate about 20 container lorries. And, around 25 such trips can be conducted one day,” said the Cochin Port Trust authorities.
