Thrissur Urban Development Authority (Tuda) is planning a massive afforestation project in the district by roping in colleges, schools and youth clubs. The project — ‘One Million Shade’ — plans to plant 10 lakh saplings in a span of five years in the district. It will be implemented with the help of National Service Scheme in 27 colleges under Calicut University, schools and youth clubs.
Tuda chairman K Radhakrishnan said, “The objective of the project is to make Thrissur a green district. There is one unit of NSS in each college and each has over 100 members. We will involve them to grow plants by collecting seeds from houses, colleges and footpaths. They can sow them in plastic kits and plant the saplings in June-July next year. They can plant them anywhere. We will also show them places to plant. They can plant around 15 saplings at each place in the corporation limit.”
Tuda will encourage students to grow plants by themselves by collecting seeds from their homes.
