The agreement signed between DP World and Cochin Port Trust for developing and operating the Vallarpadam International Container Terminal (ICTT) should be reviewed, opined speakers at a seminar on ‘Salvage Sinking Cochin Port’, organised by the Cochin Voice, here on Wednesday.

“There are enough reasons to cancel the agreement as DP World has violated various conditions in the agreement. The deal should be cancelled and the Cochin Port Trust must take over the terminal and operate it directly,” said maritime lawyer V J Mathew, who presented a paper at the seminar.

“The ICTT, so far, has not brought any monetary benefit for the Cochin port, instead it has caused huge expenses. As per the information available, as many as 21 amendments had been introduced secretly in the conditions in the agreements. The authorities should make these conditions public,” Mathew said in his paper. It was also said at the seminar that the Cochin Port Trust Board should be reconstituted and an existing member, who is a partner of DP World, should be removed.

Dominic Presentation MLA, who inaugurated the seminar, said there was no point in blaming each other. “But the root cause of the problem should be traced to find a solution,” he said. Cochin Port Dock Labour Board deputy chairman Sukumar Oommen was the chief guest.
