Almost one week after the alleged wrong diagnosis of cancer on six patients was reported, the Cochin Medical College(CMC) authorities came up with an explanation that the allegations were baseless. Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, CMC medical director Dr Junaid Rahman said that the allegations were baseless, and hence no inquiry was needed. “No report has so far contradicted the findings in the report issued by the CMC Pathology department”, Dr Junaid said.
“The FNAC report of one of the patients had shown signs of cancer. Since it was a suspicious case, samples was sent for further examination at the Regional Cancer Centre(RCC) where the disease was confirmed in a biopsy test. In the case of two patients the report issued from CMC was degenerative. But cancer was not confirmed in tests conducted at RCC.
In the case of two other patients the findings of our Pathology Department was upheld by diagnostic centres outside”, Dr Junaid Rahman clarified. Asked about the allegation that a faulty device was used for the test at CMC, the medical director said that the device microtome was not used for conducting tests on samples of the six patients whose diagnosis has sparked off a controversy.
The device is used for conducting biopsy test which is not done here. We have decided to procure a modern microtome with advanced features”, Dr Junaid said. The incident of six patients being confirmed with cancer when their pathological reports from CMC proved otherwise, has sparked off a controversy. It was even found that one of the patients was in the third stage of the disease. Petitions have been lodged before the Union Ministry of Health and the Chief Minister regarding the incident.
