CUSAT to implement pond fro rainwater harvesting

Following acute water shortage and huge expenditure incurred on water supplied by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA), the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has decided to build a pond and harvest rainwater in the campus.
While presenting the budget recently, university authorities drew the attention of syndicate members on the heavy non-plan expenditure incurred on water supplied by KWA, which levies commercial rates from Cusat.
Further, it was suggested to put a rainwater harvesting mechanism in place to ensure that all rainwater from high areas in the campus was effectively diverted towards the low-lying area near the Athithi Bhavan. This would augment water supply to the pond proposed to be constructed there. This will also help to develop this area into a ‘green’ zone. The budget also suggested exploring the feasibility of using solar energy in an extensive manner.
