More Rice Demanded From Center By Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram
The Centre has sanctioned 10 lakhtonnes of rice for the 46% people who come under the purview of the food security scheme. This rice would be provided at Rs 3 per kg by the Centre. In addition to this, the Centre would provide 4.5 lakh tonnes of rice at the rate Rs 8.90 per kg to cover the other 54% population.
However, the state government has demanded more rice in the adhoc allotment as Kerala has a rationing system covering 100% population, said chief minister Oommen Chandy.
“The Centre has accepted in principle the demand for more rice as the state is fully covered under the statutory rationing system, unlike other states. Under the food security scheme there is no BPL and APL categories, instead it has only one category that is Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card holders,” said Chandy.
As per the scheme those coming under the AAY category will get 35 kg rice per month at the rate of Re 1 per kg. Besides, the state government has decided to provide rice to the BPL category people also for Re 1 per kg, while per person in a family in the BPL category will be eligible for 5 kg rice.
Chandy said, “As per the discussions we had the Centre has sanctioned to provide 10 lakh tonnes of rice per month.” However, in the APL category the subsidized section will get 10 kg rice per month for Rs 2 per kg, while for the non-subsidized category 10 kg rice per month will be available at Rs 8.90 per kg.
In the adhoc allotment Kerala has demanded more rice for which the Centre has asked the state to submit a proposal in this regard. Now, the state will have to submit the details about the quantity of rice and specify the number of people covered under this. The rate will be finalised through discussions, said the chief minister.
