Kerala Power Situation now Depends on Summer Rainfall

Power situation in Kerala is likely to worsen, forcing the State Electricity Board to resort to stringent restrictions if the summer rains failed and availability from outside sources narrowed down, say senior officials of the board. “All the Southern States are facing power shortage and Kerala can’t depend on supplies from its neighbors for long,” the officials said.

There are conflicting predictions about summer rains. Some say there will be summer relief while others claim the State is headed for a drought-like situation. The Board currently purchases 38 to 39 million units daily from outside at an average cost of Rs 7 a unit. Of this, 24 millions units are from the Central grid at Rs 3.50 a unit. From the NTPC Kayamkulam plant ,7.5 million units are purchased at Rs11.33 a unit.

Deficient rains during both the southwest and northeast monsoon period have led to sharp fall in inflow to the reservoirs of the hydroelectric projects, resulting in the storage dropping to around 50 per cent of their capacity.
