A M Michael Aquarium Complex Opens at KUFOS

State Fisheries Minister K. Babu has called for strengthening research activities in agriculture and fisheries varsities to find solutions to the diseases afflicting coconut palms and fishes. The Minister was speaking after inaugurating the A M Michael Aquarium Complex at Kerala University of Fisheries and Oceanic Studies (KUFOS). He said that plans are also under way to expand fishery in a big way.
Kerala Aqua Ventures International Ltd will be revived to boost ornamental fishery in the State, he said, adding that KUFOS has been sanctioned sufficient funds to take up more developmental activities.Madhusoodhana Kurup, Vice-Chancellor, KUFOS, urged the Minister to sanction funds for setting up a fisheries museum and amphitheatre.
The university aims to propagate the simple techniques of fish breeding that are cost-effective and within the common man’s reach. There are 41 tanks on display with more than 25 varieties of freshwater fish and their sub-species such as silver and pearl arowanas, tetra, angel fish, gold .
