A biometric workforce management system set to go live in April 2013 will be installed by Kerala University soon as part of a government objective across all universities and some government departments. The new system will be introduced on a trial basis in phases, for the first two months. Government electronics corporation, Keltron will supply and install the equipment, though the school will run the system after its implementation.
Biometric workforce management systems, such as the planned deployment at Kerala University are increasingly being deployed to monitor the attendance of teachers, and these systems are often met with frustration and anger. Teachers in government schools in India’s Andhra Pradesh have threatened to strike against a proposed biometric attendance system.
