Kozhikode
With the price of chicken shooting up, chicken merchants in the district have threatened to close the shops indefinitely from June 19 if the supply situation did not improve. The Kozhikode district committee of the All-Kerala Chicken Merchants Association held a one-day strike in Kozhikode city on Friday protesting against the artificial shortage created by the suppliers from Tamil Nadu.
The price of chicken has risen to Rs 200 per kg from Rs 150-180 a week ago. According to traders, the fall in production in the domestic chicken poultry farms due to the unprecedented summer in the state is one of the factors for the shortage of chicken and the price rise.
Many chicken farms in Palakkad district were closed leading to a decline in the supply, P.J. Jose, a prominent chicken dealer in Kozhikode with over 25 years of experience in the field. Many units in Kozhikode district were also closed due to the heat and lack of availability of water, he added.
